Motorcycle Awareness and Insurance

Motorcycle Awareness and Insurance

Motorcycles account for only about 2 percent of registered vehicles in this country, but they are involved in about 5 percent of all highway fatalities each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Statistically, that represents the difference in personal safety between riding on a bike and riding in a car. For obvious reasons, motorcycles simply are not as safe.

Providing almost no physical protection for the rider, motorcycles are also small enough to be unseen by motorists in traffic. And NHTSA statistics show that 80 percent of motorcycle crashes result in injury or death to the rider, whereas the comparable figure for automobiles is only 20 percent.

So, if you are riding a bike, it pays to be as safety-conscious as possible at all times.

  • Stay alert. Your awareness can save your life.
  • Wear protective gear. A helmet is most important, but heavy protection for the rest of you matters, too.
  • Observe signs and traffic rules.
  • Leave yourself a cushion. Maintaining room to maneuver or escape can save your life.
  • Get motorcycle insurance coverage. This, too, is a key part of being prepared.
  • Anticipate not being seen by motorists. That is one surprise you really don’t need.
