Common Farm Equipment Accidents

Harvest season is here, which means it is time to keep your eyes peeled for farm equipment on the road. Although tractors and other farm equipment take a bit longer to make it down the road, they have a right to the road. Most farmers will pull over and let you pass when it is practical, but a little patience can go a long way. Make sure to avoid these common farm equipment accidents to keep you and the farmers of Minnesota safe this season.

  • Left turn collisions – large farm equipment has to swing right before they make a left turn to give them enough room to clear the turn. Many drivers wrongly assume that the slight right of the tractor means that the driver is pulling over. However, it can lead to a dangerous crash once the tractor starts to go left. Give tractor drivers a couple extra seconds to complete their move to ensure that you do not end up on the wrong side of the crash.
  • Rear end collisions – most farm equipment is not able to move as fast as your car, so give them some time. If you see a tractor up ahead, keep in mind that it is most likely going much slower than you are, so give yourself plenty of time to slow down.
  • Crossroad crashes – farm equipment cannot accelerate quickly. If you are coming up to an intersection and see that a tractor is starting to pull out, slow down and give them plenty of time.
